Stop voicing and F0 perturbations: Evidence from French and Italian

چکیده

We report new experimental evidence on consonantinduced F0 perturbations in two languages with prevoiced stops, French and Italian. A positive correlation between duration of voicing lead and F0 at the onset of post-release voicing is observed, consistent with the predictions of an automatic or biomechanical account of the source of this effect. While the findings do not strictly rule out a role for onset F0 as a controlled enhancement, they support the proposal that, if anything, the enhancement is of [-voice] or [stiff] rather than [+voice].

Effects of obstruent voicing on vowel F0: Evidence from "true voicing" languages.

This study investigates consonant-related F0 perturbations ("CF0") in French and Italian by comparing the effects of voiced and voiceless obstruents on F0 to those of voiced sonorants. The voiceless obstruents /p f/ in both languages are found to have F0-raising properties similar to American English voiceless obstruents, while F0 following the (pre)voiced obstruents /b v/ in French and Italian...

Production and perception of velar stop (de)voicing in European Portuguese and Italian

Speech production and speech perception studies were conducted to compare (de)voicing in the Romance languages European Portuguese (EP) and Italian. For the speech production part, velar stops in two positions and four vowel contexts were recorded. The voicing status for 10 consecutive landmarks during stop closure was computed. Results showed that during the complete stop closure voicing was a...

Influence of fundamental frequency on stop-consonant voicing perception: a case of learned covariation or auditory enhancement?

For stimuli modeling stop consonants varying in the acoustic correlates of voice onset time (VOT), human listeners are more likely to perceive stimuli with lower f0's as voiced consonants--a pattern of perception that follows regularities in English speech production. The present study examines the basis of this observation. One hypothesis is that lower f0's enhance perception of voiced stops b...

Independence of consonantal voicing and vocoid F0 perturbation in English and Japanese

Data collected from Japanese and English showed that both phonetically fully voiced and (partially) devoiced allophones of /d/ have very similar perturbatory effect on the F0 of the following vowel. It is considered, therefore, that the phonetic voicing of /d/ (periodicity during the closure) i s not clearly correlated with lower levels of F0 on the following vowel. Although the F0 perturbation...

Prosodic effects on acoustic cues to stop voicing and place of articulation: Evidence from Radio News speech

This study examines the effects of prosody on the acoustic cues of stop consonants, based on speech from the Boston University Radio News corpus. An investigation of VOT, f0, closure duration, burst amplitude and spectral characteristics provide evidence for a primary effect of accent (a level of phrasal prominence) on these measures as cues to stop voicing and/or place of articulation. There a...
